About ozone
Ozone has a very high disinfecting and oxidizing power. This blue gas can destroy all the microorganisms in the water, including viruses, bacteria and fungi, and even chlorine-resistant microbes (such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia), as well as contaminants such as the skin, hair and sweat of swimmers. The use of ozone for disinfection improves pool water quality, eliminates chloramines (which are the main cause of irritated, itchy eyes and dry skin after swimming) and significantly reduces chlorine consumption.
Unlike chlorine, ozone cannot be transformed into solid or liquid formats. Therefore, to sanitize water with ozone, a device called ozone generator is required, which, like other disinfection equipment, is installed in the return line of the filtration system (after pool filter and heater). In this device, ozone molecules are generated in a process that involves the decomposition of the oxygen molecule.
Ozone molecules are unstable, and most of them decompose before water is returned to the pool. Therefore, it is essential that pool water always contains a completely stable disinfectant such as chlorine. If an ozone generator is used as a complementary system, the pool water should contain only about 1.5 ppm of chlorine. This is while the chlorine content of ordinary pools is 3 ppm.
